The rare spectacle lasted for three hours as the Earth's shadow moved across the moon.

Although it became dimmer, the moon could still be seen as it was lit by the sunlight passing through our atmosphere.

As it moved into the darkest part of the shadow, the moon assumed a grey or red colour.

The next total lunar eclipse will occur in 2014 and will be visible only in parts of Asia, New Zealand and Australia.
